The Caddie

"So what?" the first boy shrugs as he works on the padlock keeping the garage closed.

"So...we can't just break into this guy's place, who knows what he'll do to us!" the second boy whispers loudly, looking over his shoulders constantly.

"He won't do anything," the first rolls his eyes, then lets out a "Woohoo!" as the lock finally pops open. With a quick glance around, he lifts the garage door just enough for the two of them to slide under and in.

"Not complaining now are ya?" the first asks with a smirk, as the two boys look around in awe at the treasure they just uncovered.

A 1959 Cadillac Eldorado, black and chrome, sat before them. They looked at each other with mischievous delight, then the first called "Driver!" and ran to the driver side door.

With a bit of a grumble, the second made his way to the passenger's side and both climbed into the immaculate vehicle. They were grinning again as they admired the inside, then they had themselves a good half hour of pretending to drive the vehicle.

There's a cough behind them, "It works better if you have these," a man's deep voice says, a touch of amusement in his voice, and he held up a set of keys with a black rabbit's foot and jingled them.

The boys bolted out of the car and ran for the garage door, but the man was already there and gripped the two by the back of their jackets, "You came all this way? Don't you want to take a ride?" the man asked.

The two boys looked at each other nervously, "Uh, no, it's okay mister," the second stammers while at the same time the first nods, "Yes!"

The man laughs and lets the boys go, "Tell ya what. You buy me a new padlock for my door, and do a few chores for me, and I'll take you on that ride. Deal?" he offers them.

The boys send silent messages to each other, then the first puts out his hand to the man, "It's a deal," he says, and shakes as firmly as his nervousness would let him.

"Now get going before I decide to call your parents," the man says, voice authoritative now.

The two boys nod and scramble out the way they came, the man watching in amusement. He turns back to the car, runs a loving hand over it, and buffs out an imaginary scuff, "Nice to be still appreciated huh?" he asks it, then chuckles and heads back inside the house, tossing the keys up and down as he went.
